Digital Rock Analysis

In this series, we will take a deep dive into digital rock analysis. This is a three-part monthly workshop; 1 - Data collection, 2 - Segmentation and property analysis, and 3 - digital rock simulations.

1. Data collection

There are many data collection parameters to consider. The X-ray voltage and filter contribute to the image contrast and beam hardening artifacts. The scan time affects the signal-to-noise ratio. And the resolution needs to be carefully selected to run accurate simulations. In this episode, we will go into the lab and compare different data collection settings. Then we will review how to collect high-quality CT images of a drill core that can be used for digital rock analysis

 

2. Segmentation and property analyses

Image segmentation, or labeling of all voxels, is the first step of the analysis. There are different techniques you can use for segmentation. Once the image is segmented into different phases, we can start analyzing basic properties, such as porosity and the ratio of open and closed pores. In this episode, we will review image segmentation, and calculate the basic properties of rock samples.

 

3. Digital rock simulations

When the CT image of a rock sample has sufficient resolution and is segmented well, we can simulate the flow characteristics of the rock and obtain permeabilities and visualize the percolation path, flow field velocity, etc. In this episode, we will look into how we can run these simulations.

1. Data collection

Filtration analysis using CT investigates a wide range of materials from filter media to complete filters. Because of the range of materials and sample sizes, data collection must be carefully considered. For example, samples may require either micro or nano-scale imaging to achieve sufficient resolution of filter materials. In this episode, we will go into the lab to investigate how to choose the best data collection geometry and data collection parameters. Then we will review how to collect high-quality CT images of filter media that can be used for digital filtration analysis.

 

2. Segmentation and property analyses

Image segmentation, or labeling of all voxels, is always the first step of the analysis and there are many different techniques to perform segmentation. Once the image is segmented, we can start analyzing the basic properties of filtration media and devices. These analyses will include characterization of media, whether the media be fibrous or other material. For example, we can calculate filter component size, orientation, volume percentage, and other parameters. In this episode, we will review image segmentation. Then, we will calculate some basic properties of filter samples and prepare data for simulations.

 

3. Filtration simulations

When the CT image of filter material has sufficient resolution and is segmented well, we can simulate flow through filtration materials to determine filter efficiency and to analyze filter clogging and lifetime. In this episode, we will investigate how we can run these simulations.
